Ran into a problem were I didn't have enough hard drive space left on a vmwre virtual machine. A tool included with the free vmware server, vmware-vdiskmanager, easily increased the size,

Used the following commandline:
vmware-vdiskmanager -x 10GB mydisk.vmdk

Then used Partition Logic to resize the partition.
